Their high-pitched, whinnying call can be heard on summer nights. Found all across the eastern U.S., Canada and Mexico, eastern screech owls are nocturnal predators that feed on mice, voles, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hobbyfarms.com\/garden-bunny-blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rabbits<\/a>, squirrels and even large insects. Another species, the western screech owl (<em>Megascops kennicottii<\/em>) is nearly identical, and it&#8217;s found across the western part of the continent. It&#8217;s important to encourage as many screech owls as possible because they help control rodents. You can encourage them by building an Eastern screech owl nest box.<\/p>\n<p>Both types of screech owls are cavity nesters, typically making a home in a previously excavated woodpecker hole or in a manmade nesting box. Breeding pairs often return to the same hole every season. They prefer open woodlands, grasslands and parks for nesting sites, but they&#8217;ve adjusted quite well to humans and can often be found nesting in suburban backyards.<\/p>\n<p>We encouraged these helpful nocturnal predators to call our home theirs by erecting a screech owl nesting box on our property. Eastern screech owls typically lay eggs in April, with each brood containing between one and six eggs. After a near month-long incubation period, the eggs hatch. The parent owls feed their growing babies lots of bugs (including beetles, cicadas and crickets) as well as pieces of animal flesh. Here are the plans we use to make our screech owl nest boxes. The original plan for this screech owl nesting box came from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcwild.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Treasure Coast Wildlife Center<\/a> in Florida.<\/p>\n<h2>What You&#8217;ll Need to Build an Eastern Screen Owl Nest Box<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>1 8-foot-long, 1-by-10-inch cedar board<\/li>\n<li>1 box 1<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00bc<\/span>-inch wood screws<\/li>\n<li>1 set of two 1<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00bd<\/span>-inch hinges<\/li>\n<li>miter saw or circular saw<\/li>\n<li>measuring tape<\/li>\n<li>framing square<\/li>\n<li>straight edge<\/li>\n<li>cordless drill<\/li>\n<li>spiral bit set<\/li>\n<li>driving bit set<\/li>\n<li>3-inch hole saw bit<\/li>\n<li>sandpaper<\/li>\n<li>safety glasses<\/li>\n<li>work gloves<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to Build an Eastern Screen Owl Nest Box &#8211; Steps 1 to 5<\/h2>\n<h3>Step 1<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44820\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44820\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-44820 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/img.hobbyfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/07121345\/screechowlboxcuts_800_JW.jpg\" alt=\"wood needed for making a screeech owl nest box\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44820\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jessica Walliser<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Measure and mark the cedar board according to the following photograph. Set the two side panels up on their back edges. (The highest edge of their slope should be against the back panel.) Place the back panel on top of them, lining the side edges up so there&#8217;s a small overhang on each side. Attach the hinged roof by placing the roof panel on the slanted edge of the side panels. Cedar is a naturally rot-resistant wood, so there&#8217;s no need to paint or stain the box. Over time, it will weather to a soft gray.<\/p>\n<h2>Placing Your Eastern\u00a0 Screech Owl Nest Box<\/h2>\n<p>Your Eastern screech owl nest box should be hung on a pole, tree, shed, barn or other structure about 10 to 15 feet off the ground. Try to place it in an open area near a tree line.<\/p>\n<p>Like all owls, screech owls will not build a nest inside of their nesting cavity or box. Instead, the females lay their eggs on whatever materials remain from the previous resident&#8217;s excavation or nesting efforts.
